How to stop spam texts on Android: Google Messages and Samsung steps

To stop spam texts on Android, check that your Messages app's spam protection is on, then block and report every spam text instead of replying. It takes two minutes. Below are the exact menus for Google Messages and Samsung Messages, plus what to do about the wave of political texts this week.

Scam or safe? The voter reward text, and the one rule. Illustrative scenario.

First, which texting app do you use?

Pixels and many other Android phones use Google Messages (a blue chat bubble icon). Samsung Galaxy phones often come with Samsung Messages, though many people switch to Google Messages. Open your texting app and tap the three dots or your profile picture: if you see "Messages settings," follow the Google steps.

How to stop spam texts on Android with Google Messages

Per Google's Messages help page:

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Tap your profile picture (top right) > Messages settings > Protection & Safety > Spam and scam protection.
  3. Pick Standard or Enhanced protection. Standard is on by default and checks messages on your phone; Enhanced can also use Google's private cloud processing.

Suspected spam goes to a Spam & blocked folder instead of your inbox. On Pixels there's a second layer: Settings > Security & privacy > More security & privacy > Scam Detection, where "Message scams" puts a red "Likely scam" warning on suspicious chats (Pixel help). Google notes it won't catch every scam.

Block and report a spam text in Google Messages

Touch and hold the conversation, tap Block, then Report spam > OK. Or open the chat and tap More options > Details > Block & report spam (Google). Reporting tells Google and your carrier, and senders found spamming can be suspended.

How to block spam texts on Samsung Messages

From Samsung's support page:

  1. Open Samsung Messages and touch and hold the spam conversation.
  2. Tap More > Block, and confirm.
  3. To block a number that hasn't texted you yet: More options (three dots) > Settings > Block numbers and spam > Block numbers, enter it, tap Add.

Samsung's own app leans on blocking one number at a time. If spam keeps getting through, installing Google Messages and setting it as your default texting app gives you the automatic spam filter above.

Report spam texts to 7726, and never reply to scams

Forward any spam text to 7726 (it spells SPAM) so your carrier can trace the sender, then delete it. Don't reply to unknown senders, not even STOP. The FTC's advice for unexpected texts is to not click links and not respond (FTC). Texts are a big business for scammers: people reported losing $470 million to text scams in 2024 (FTC Data Spotlight). We broke down two of the most common ones: fake toll texts and fake Amazon refund texts.

What about political texts?

Election week is peak season. The FCC's rules: political texts sent with an autodialer need your prior consent, but texts sent manually don't, which is why so many come from real people (FCC guide). For a campaign you recognize, replying STOP is the right move, and the FCC says campaigns should stop when you do. For anything offering money, a "voter reward" or a link to "confirm your registration," treat it as a scam: don't tap, block and report. You can file complaints at consumercomplaints.fcc.gov.

Why you get spam texts in the first place

Your number is on lists. People-search sites and data brokers sell it with your name. On our own Cloaked account, 1,363 of the exposures it has secured were phone numbers. We explain the five ways it gets out, and how to opt out free, in how do spammers get my phone number.

Common questions about spam texts on Android

Does Android have a spam text filter?

Yes. Google Messages has spam and scam protection that's on by default and moves suspected spam to a Spam & blocked folder. You can check it in Messages settings under Protection & Safety.

Should I reply STOP to spam texts?

Only to a sender you recognize, like a real store or a real political campaign, which must stop texting you once you opt out. For unknown senders and anything that looks like a scam, don't reply at all; block and report it instead.

How do I block texts on a Samsung phone?

In Samsung Messages, touch and hold the conversation, tap More, then Block. To add a number by hand, open Messages settings and go to Block numbers and spam.

Why am I suddenly getting so many political texts?

Campaigns text heavily before an election. Under FCC rules, autodialed political texts need your prior consent, but texts sent manually do not, which is why so many come from real people at campaign text centers.
